Since propane is an odourless gas, an artificial odour of rotten eggs (ethanethiol) is added to propane gas so that it can be detected easily. If you detect such an odour, you must immediately leave your home and check the level of your tank.
- If it is empty, close the valve on the tank by turning it clockwise and call your propane supplier to order a delivery of gas. Please note that, even without a leak, the smell is normal f the tank is empty. The product added to propane to facilitate its detection collects in the bottom of the reservoir, accentuating its effects. It is important to keep your home well-ventilated to get rid of the smell.
- If the tank still contains gas, close the tank valve by turning clockwise and call your propane supplier and request a technician to repair the leak. Do not open the reservoir or any devices before the technician is present. It is important to keep your home well-ventilated to get rid of the smell.
Important: During propane gas leaks, do not turn on any lights or use flashlights or candles for light and do not use any other sources of light.
